NEW YORK – On May 24, Brooklyn’s Ghost Gallery will open a new Manhattan satellite space at 63 Orchard Street. The opening exhibition, “Danny Cole’s Departure”, is the first solo show by New York-based artist Danny Cole and is curated by the gallery’s director, Stephan Alexander. There will be an opening reception on May 25 from 7-11 pm with music by Herrick and Hooley. The exhibition will be on view until June 16.

Danny Cole is an 18 year old artist based in New York City. Though new to the art world, his paintings have been featured at MoMA PS1 and he’s received write-ups in Milk.xyz, VFILES and Vice. In 2018 he was commissioned by the popular rock band Portugal. The Man to design the visuals for their stage show and has since joined their team as Creative Director.

The ten recently completed paintings in the exhibition are populated with Cole’s distinct and recognizable minimalistic characters. These figures are used by Cole to communicate and embody his personal truths. The “Danny Cole’s Departure” series was created while the artist was in a transitory and introspective state focusing exclusively on his attempts to understand his experiences with human interaction. Throughout his journey, Cole is drawn further away from reality and from his surroundings. This process lead him to what he describes as a dissociative state. Despite the similarities between Cole’s characters and human beings, the creatures and settings are not replications of the the physical world we live in, but rather a reflection on human consciousness, connection, and awareness.
